Music for everyone

So it’s the end of the year and the TV people are going crazy. In every channel, there is a program about every single things that happened in 2007. Today, I was watching a recap of important events in the kingdom of superstars (who are called “People” in French): Who married whom, who went to jail, who divorced, whose dog had a flu, and who died.

One of the greatest losses in 2007 in the world of music was the death of Luciano Pavarotti. When he passed away, I followed his funeral on TV and I had goosebumps every time they would show him on stage. Not that I am a big fan of opera, no. It is because he made this isolated form of art accessible for the mass, that I admire him. There is not a person who hasn’t heard his name or his voice. He didn’t sit back in his glamorous apartment and say “Oh, my music is for the elite, those who understand it, the rest can go and listen to Michael Jackson”! Instead of keeping his songs for the “Nobles”, he popularized it by singing with pop stars such as Bono, James Brown (who also passed away in 2007), Lisa Minelli, and others. By doing so, he built a bridge between his camp and the camp of billions of young people who would probably never listen to an opera piece.

I have great respect for such people. They transcend the norms imposed on their profession to interact with ordinary people. They have a different view on the value of art. I just found this video too, which is probably my favorite. The happy atmosphere on the stage and in the people is priceless. Enjoy!
